scripturient
Character
Name: Yavanna | Kementári (Quenya, “Queen of the Earth”), Ivon (Sindarin, “Giver of Fruits”), Palúrien (Quenya, “Lady of the Wide Earth” - no longer in use)
Canon: Tolkien’s Silmarillion
Pull-point: After the Trees are destroyed and Fëanor refuses to share his shinies, just after the Sun and Moon are created
Power Opt-in post link: here
Content Opt-out post link: N/A
Age: Older than Arda itself
Gender/Sex: primarily female, though gender with Valar is pretty fluid
Appearance: Canon only says that Yavanna is a tall woman robed in green, and that she is sometimes a tree. I’m going to go with her being about 6ft. The PB I have chosen is Valerie June.
History:
- World begins. Yavanna plants seeds, Aulë makes lamps to light the world. Yavanna’s Spring begins.
- Melkor hides behind a lantern in the shadows and somehow no one notices until he pops out and breaks the lamps, kills Yavanna’s plants. Earth apparently starts having seizures and all the Valar have to help “restrain the tumults”
- Valar ditch Arda and go hang out in Aman, make it even prettier than Arda
- Yavanna and Nienna grow the Two Trees of Valinor, Telperion and Laurelin.
- Yavanna refuses to totally ditch Arda because she spent a lot of time on that. She starts talking about going to war with Melkor again because he messed with her stuff
- Aulë decides to be a genius and builds the dwarves in secret. Eru finds out and is secretly pleased but acts like a stern dad because parenting is important. Aulë says he just wants to be a dad but offers to kill his dwarves because he’s a good son.
- Eru’s like lol no they’re cool they can live but they have to wait until the Elves show up
- Yavanna thinks that’s tight that Eru was so awesome so she goes to Manwë asking for someone to defend her creations that can’t fight for themselves
- Manwë talks to Eru for her, grants her permission to have Shepherds of the Forest, or Ents, to protect her trees
- Yavanna goes back to the ~council~ of Valar and tells them to get their butts into gear because the elves are gonna show up soon and Melkor’s still breaking stuff.
- Elves show up. Oromë finds them by total accident and thinks they’re the cutest little buggers so he hangs out with them
- Manwë decides to go attack Melkor again. Melkor is bound and returned to Valinor to rot in Mandos’ jail
- Melkor pretends to be sorry and Manwë forgives him for some dumb reason but he has to stay in their city.
- Fëanor makes the Silmarils using the light of the Trees.
- Melkor immediately wants the Silmarils and no one is surprised. He starts manipulating everyone and spreading lies about how awful the Valar are.
- Melkor shows up at Fëanor’s door to be a dick to him. Fëanor realizes what an asshole Melkor is and yells at him.
- Melkor meets up with Ungoliant who’s this giant evil spider queen that literally oozes evil
- Melkor and Ungoliant sneak back into Aman and attack the Trees while everyone's out partying because it’s harvest time. Melkor wounds the trees and Ungoliant...eats...them??
- Manwë finally realizes that they’ve been attacked.
- Yavanna asks Fëanor to give her the Silmarils because she can revive the Trees using them. Fëanor says that if they’re gonna force him to give up his Silmarils then they’re no better than Melkor.
- Valar create the Sun and Moon from Tree fruit.
Personality: Yavanna is definitely someone that you would not want to cross. She’s a fighter through and through, and she does not forgive easily. When all the other Vala were content to sit back and enjoy Aman, she was the one talking about going to war with Melkor. Ultimately, it was Yavanna that convinced Manwe to deal with Melkor before the Elves showed up. She has a deep love for her own creations, and often thinks and worries about their well-being. The Ents are a perfect example of this. She went to Eru himself to fight for her trees.
While Yavanna definitely has a tough side that we see more often than not in the Silmarillion, she is also a mother. She loves all of Eru’s children like her own. While not necessarily canon, my Yavanna also sees herself as the mother of the Hobbits, who love and respect her creations better than most other races. She’s like a mother bear; She’s very caring and loving with her children, but should anyone threaten them, out come the teeth and claws.
Yavanna also has a patience that’s characteristic of a mother. The Valier, or female Valar, do not have as much power or say as the male Valar, and Yavanna has developed the patience to work around that. She has learned to deal with her brothers and husband in a way that allows her to still have a great deal of influence. In fact, she’s second in power to Varda as far as the Valier go. Her Quenya name, Kementári, literally translates into “Queen of the Earth”.
I like to think of Yavanna as the quintessential mother. She literally has it all. She is strong and independent, but is also patient, wise, and loving.
Abilities:
Valar: As a Valar, she has some abilities that just come with the territory. Generally, she is a spirit and can take whatever form she pleases, though her favorites are that of a woman robed in green and a Tree. In game, Yavanna has a mortal body, and is capable of shifting into a Tree. She can also sense other spirits like her (Ainur and Maiar).
Aratar: Yavanna is one of the Aratar, essentially Valar royalty. She is the second strongest Valier (female Valar) after Varda. She also has a great deal of influence and is excellent at talking people around.
Plants: Yavanna has the ability to manipulate plant life. This includes reviving dead/dying plants, accelerating growth of plants, creating plants, and moving/shaping them in whatever way she pleases.
Shepherds of the Forest: Ents are the protectors of her creations, given to her by Eru himself.Yavanna can summon them and manipulate them to fight for her/her creations at will. Since Ents are sentient and can be a playable character in their own right, she'll be unable to summon real Ents. What we would allow is up to 5 human sized (or 10 hobbit sized) mindless moving tree people that follow her command. They lack free will or understanding of language. They only follow Yavanna's commands.
The Music: As one of the Valar, Yavanna helped create the Song that became the world. Many of her abilities tap into the Music, and she used it to create Telperion and Laurelin. Obviously she's not going to be growing magic glowy trees here, but I would like for her to still be able to at least try to manipulate the Music. This means, of course, that she can hear the Song and how mangled it's become, and will certainly try to fix it.
Languages: Last but not least, Yavanna can understandall languages from Arda and can use telepathy to communicate, which she will use primarily with other Valar.
Inventory: seeds to plant. A dead branch from Telperion or Laurelin would be cool too
Anything else: Yavanna has one named Maiar, Ailweldil (Radagast). Her husband Aulë, however, had both Mairon and Curumo, who later became Sauron and Saruman.
